Purpose: The aim of this paper was to clarify the concept of powerlessness in the elderly.
Methods: A literature search was conducted using RISS, MEDLINE, and CINAHL. Based on the Walker and Avant’s concept analysis method, the definition of powerlessness in the elderly, its attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents were discussed.
Results: Through an integrative literature review and case analysis, the attributes of the powerlessness in the elderly were identified as 1) sense of loss, 2) sense of worthlessness, 3) avoidance, and 4) negative emotion.
Conclusion: The results of this concept analysis will be of help for understanding of the concept of powerlessness in the elderly and provide theoretical basis for use of the concept in nursing practice for the elderly.
