Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of job stress and role recognition on burnout in preceptor nurses.

Methods: A descriptive research design was used with a convenience sample of 131 preceptor nurses. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires from Mar 1 to Apr 30, 2019. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression.

Results: The mean scores of job stress and role recognition and burnout were 3.53 out of 5, 3.77 out of 5 and 2.64 out of 5, respectively. Preceptor nurses¡¯ burnout was positively correlated with job stress and negatively correlated with role recognition. Factors influencing on preceptor nurses¡¯ burnout were organizational job stress and role recognition which explained 13.9% of the variance.

Conclusion: Based on the finding of this study, it is necessary to develop education and intervention programs in order to reduce job stress and enhance role recognition of preceptor nurses. Furthermore, recurrent studies are needed on factors affecting future exhaustion of preceptor nurses.
