Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between the symptoms of bone and sinews, and daily hours of computer use, the level of rest, posture, sleeping hours, and stress level. The subjects were 305 university students in 5 universities located in Seoul(166 males - 54.4%, 139 females - 45.6%). When looking into the characteristics of the subjects, there were more male students (54.4%) than female students(45.6%). According to the year, there were 28 freshmen(9.2%), 68 sophomore(22.3%), 78 juniors(25.6%), and 131 seniors(43%). When looking into the symptoms of the subjects by body part, 209 indicated neck pain(68.3%), 109 shoulder(64.4%), 211 indicated back and waist(69%), and 151 hands and wrists(49.3%). Therefore, the order was back and waist, neck, shoulder, hands, wrists, from highest to the lowest. The results of the studies¡¯ marked symptom score, the shoulder area scored the highest. The significant fact associated with the rate of symptoms differed from body part to body part. The suggestions that follow this study are that: university students who use the computer frequently should control the amount of time they use the computer and take rests while using the computer and that they had better be aware that psychological stress afects the muscoskeletal system and had therefore better think about methods of preventing the development of muscoskeletal symptoms.
