Abstract

The author examined 294 normal infants at the Goo Maternity Hospital, Pusan from December 1965, to May, 1966.
Each infant was examined regarding the state of delivery, buttock skin folds, the relative length of lower limbs, the Presence of Instability, and the amount of abduction of the thigh from the midline
The author measured internal and external rotation of the hip joint in 52 infants and 154 children under 5 years of age at an orphanage located in Pusan.
The author reviewed many articles concerning the etiology, incidence and reliacle symptoms of congenital dislocation of the hip, and femoral neck anteversion.
Following results were obtained by examination of new borns and measurement of internal and external rotation of hip in infants and children under 5 years old.
1. Among 294 live births, normal delivery was performed in 265, forceps delivery in 15, 7 had abnormal presen tation, and Cesarian section was carried out in 6 cases.
2. Of the 294 the live newborns, 157 were boys and 137 were girls.
3. The author observed one case of asymmetric buttock skin folds, a case of extra fold, two cases of relative shortening of lower limb, and three cases of instability, tested by push-pull mobility of hip.
4. There were 15 cases that showed 75 degrees of abduction of the thigh from the midline with the hip flexed 90 degrees, and 251 cases showed 90 degrees of abduction.
5. A newborn who was premature and had also experienced difficult delivery, showed asymmetric buttock skin folds, relative shortening of lower limb, limitation of abduction of the thigh and instability with Ortolani¢¥s click.
6. The over-all mean of internal rotation of 400 hips in 52 infants and 153 children under 5 years old was 36.37 degrees, and that of external rotation 53.03 degrees, and the range of rotation of hip 89.4 degrees.
