Objectives: This study investigated the association between smoking, alcohol drinking, and atopic dermatitis in Korean adolescents.
Methods: The study subjects were 72,299 adolescents who participated in the Eighth Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2012). Data were collected anonymously using a self-administered, web-based survey. Atopic dermatitis was defined as presence of a lifetime diagnosis. Smoking (lifetime smoking experience, age when first smoked, number of cigarettes per day, number of days, and secondhand smoke) and drinking (lifetime drinking experience, age when first drank, alcohol consumption amount, and number of days of drinking) behaviors were analyzed with atopic dermatitis.
Results: Of the 72,229 adolescents, the lifetime prevalence of atopic dermatitis was 21.2% and 27.9% in boys and girls, respectively. Lifetime prevalence of a diagnosis of atopic dermatitis was higher in boys who smoked all of the previous 30 days compared to those who never smoked (aOR=1.21, 95% CI=1.02~1.43) after adjusting for grade level, school record, family structure, perceived stress, perceived sadness/hopelessness, being overweight and drinking. Girls who drank more than one bottle of alcohol (aOR=1.44, 95% CI=1.13~1.84) and drank for 1~9 days (aOR= 1.17, 95% CI=1.03~1.33) during the previous 30 days showed higher prevalence of atopic dermatitis compared with non-drinkers.
Conclusions: Smoking and alcohol drinking were associated with atopic dermatitis in different ways. A prospective study is needed to investigate the temporal relationships between smoking, alcohol drinking, and atopic dermatitis.
